FAQ

Does Intellectual Property theft really happen that often?

YES! It is happens everyday and is more common that businesses would like us to know about.

Here are the facts. . .

  • "Online information theft, including unauthorized access to corporate secrets, is estimated to be in excess of $10 billion annually in the U.S. alone."

  • "In a recent Ernst & Young survey of North American companies, 54% of respondents admitted to financial losses related to information security over the past two years."

  • "According to a study released by the American Society for Industrial Security and consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers fortune 1,000 companies lost more than $45 billion from the theft of proprietary information in 1999.”

  • According to the 2003 CSI/FBI Computer Crime and Security Surveys (http://gocsi.com), theft of proprietary information is reported as being responsible for the most financial loss for the last 4 consecutive years.

  • The 2003 CSI/FBI survey also estimates that the average corporate financial loss for information theft is $2.7 million per incident.

Startling facts but true. . .

Do I really need this much protection for my documents?

It depends on how important the information is to you or business. How much damage would it do of it was available to the public freely? If your information is not too critical, then you don't need this system. Basic password protection of the file would work in this situation. However, if you need more protection and real-time control and tracking of your document usage, this system is needed.

Is this type of protection legal?

Absolutely! File Secure Pro provides copyright protection and management. This "patent-pending" technology is protected under the US Copyright Code, Title 17, Section 1201, also called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The DMCA prohibits circumvention of access control technologies employed by copyright owners to protect their works. Specifically, section 1201 provides that:

"No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title."

Under theDMCA, the US Government has made it illegal to attempt to circumvent any document security measure that attempts to control access and use of work protected under US Copyright Code. They have also made it illegal to create or sell technology that is designed to circumvent copyright protection systems and technology.

For more information, please see: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap12.html#1201. You can download the entire DMCA here: http://www.copyright.gov/legislation/hr2281.pdf

Your system seems a bit expensive. Why would I choose File Secure Pro® over a cheaper protection system?

For what you receive, File Secure Pro® is actually the most moderately priced solution available. It is comparable in many ways to systems costing well over $15,000. Yes, there are systems cheaper than File Secure Pro however make sure you know what you are getting before you put your document security at risk.

  1. First, you should rely on only registered Adobe Solution Network Developers. These are companies approved by Adobe to develop applications for their PDF document format. We have been registered ASN Developers since 2001. To find us, click here.

  2. Second, any application that attempts to modify or control viewing of a PDF file via Adobe Reader will require an authorized Adobe Reader DRM Plug-in key. To obtain this key, requires a license from Adobe. Due to the high cost, there are very few companies that actually have an authorized reader plug-in. Without it, these companies risk being heavily fined and/or shut down by Adobe, leaving your document protection at risk.

You must be aware of this when considering solutions. Adobe has strict rules on what you can and cannot do to modify Adobe Reader. Some companies are altering the Reader interface and file menus. These are blatant violations of Adobe's usage policies. Maybe they just do not know the rules Adobe has in place, or maybe they are just hoping they don't get caught! Either way, you lose in the end. Once Adobe catches up with this illegal activity, they will be shut down.

  3. Third, make sure that your data is safe. Users and files on the File Secure servers are backed up daily to a private network location for security. In case of a power failure we have a Cummins 313kva Diesel Backup generator that engages automatically in case of power failures.

  4. Finally, we urge you to compare features. There is no system available today that provides the complete PDF protection, document distribution, payment system integration and overall database management that comes with File Secure Pro.

Here is a good overview of some of the "real-time" document protection systems currently available: http://www.protectionreview.com/overview.html

What type of files does File Secure Pro protect?

The system was designed primarily to protect PDF files, but it can encrypt and protect almost any file type, including software programs and compiled HTML ebooks. This allows you to distribute, monitor and control user access to those files. However, most of the advanced protection features are only available for PDF documents.

I use another system that says they are 100% secure. Is this possible?

PDF files are meant to be an easily distributed and viewed file format. By nature they are very easy to view, edit and distribute. The file format was designed them this way. Adobe succeeded in making a popular viewing format, but what they did not foresee is that people would want to distribute private and sensitive PDF documents via the Internet and E-mail. Due to the lack of sufficient security in the current viewing applications, distribution of sensitive information is not advised. There are too many security holes that can simply allow your data to be stolen.

When a company says their product "Protects PDF files", in most cases it is unlikely that they totally protect them. They are basically saying, "We added some security to PDF files, but we hope you don't see the loopholes we could not fix"! To be totally protected you must cover all the major security holes and flaws.

In order to be totally protected, the PDF security system you use MUST:

  • Prevent saving a copy of file.
  • Prevent emailing of file and exporting or extracting pages from file
  • Prevent copying of file from the TEMP folder
  • Prevent copying file and text to the clipboard
  • Prevent redistilling of the file (this includes preventing: printing-to-FILE, printing-to-PDF, printing-to-TIFF)
  • Prevent unlimited, uncontrolled printing of file
  • Prevent access to file without permission
  • Watermark all printed pages

No system is 100% unbreakable, but you must at least cover the obvious bases. Any system you use must address the above issues to be considered "complete" protection. If it does not, forget it and move on.

File Secure Pro protects all of the above and more. It makes theft and unauthorized use extremely difficult and unlikely for even the most determined individuals.
